Worldbuilding & internal consistency
← Craft Glossary · Point of View, Setting & World
Plain English: The invented rules of the world — its physics, magic, tech, economy, history — and the discipline of obeying them once set. (For this project, the mythos rules and the grounded-engineering contract.)
Rule: Define the rules early and keep them; consistency is what buys belief. Track geography and travel-time so distances stay sane (the "can a bakkie carry that?" class of check). Reveal the world through use and need, not lecture.
Fail: Breaking your own rules for plot convenience (a power that vanishes when inconvenient); info-dump worldbuilding (the encyclopedia entry dropped into chapter one); and the physical-plausibility gap — a load, a lift, a travel time that internal continuity can't catch because nothing contradicts it on the page, it's just physically impossible.
