Plain English: Your theme is what the book is about underneath (here: the cost of knowing, consciousness-based reality). A thesis statement is the bad habit of having a character or narrator say the theme out loud. Theme should be embodied in choices, not announced.

In this project: A named failure mode the engine hunts — "the climax is a forty-page thesis." There's a tool that ranks thesis-like sentences for cutting.
