Plain English: A mythic overlay on the three acts: Ordinary World → Call to Adventure → Refusal → Mentor → Crossing the Threshold → Tests/Allies/Enemies → Ordeal → Reward → Road Back → Resurrection → Return with the Elixir. Departure / Initiation / Return map to the three acts.
Rule: Useful for diagnosing what's missing (no real threshold-crossing? no cost at the ordeal? the hero returns unchanged?). The "elixir" is the thematic payoff carried home.
Fail: Slavish beat-ticking that produces a generic chosen-one arc. The monomyth is a description of many stories, not a recipe for a good one; subvert freely.
