Standalone-completeness rule

← Craft Glossary · Series & Trilogy Architecture

Plain English: Each volume must satisfy on its own — a newcomer starting at book 3 should get a complete, comprehensible story — while rewarding the series reader more.

Rule: In this project this is D-locked: RELIC is 100% standalone for a newcomer and openly the finale for a series reader. Series payoffs reward, never require.

Fail: Load-bearing dependence on prior books (a newcomer is lost), or the opposite — amnesiac standalone-ness that ignores the series and gives returning readers nothing.
