Setting as character / sense of place

← Craft Glossary · Point of View, Setting & World

Plain English: Place rendered so vividly and specifically that it shapes mood and feels alive — not a painted backdrop. The repo calls the felt version place magnetism / wonder of place.

Rule: Filter setting through the POV character — they notice what their history, profession, and mood make salient (Priya reads a chamber as an engineer would). One precise, sensory, character-colored detail beats a paragraph of survey.

Fail: Travel-guide / real-estate-listing description — "nestled", "vibrant", "boasts" — generic scenery with no POV filter (also a textbook AI tell). Or the opposite: no grounding at all, characters talking in a white void.

See: Place Magnetism is a trilogy payoff (memory) · novelbench place-magnetism dimension
