Second-book syndrome / "middle book" problem

← Craft Glossary · Series & Trilogy Architecture

Plain English: The classic trap: the middle volume sags because it neither sets up (book 1 did) nor resolves (book 3 will), so it becomes connective tissue with no spine of its own.

Rule: Give the middle book its own dramatic question, midpoint, and resolution — a complete arc that also turns the series. Raise the series stakes here; end on a genuine reversal, not just a cliffhanger comma.

Fail: A middle book that is all setup-for-book-3 and table-setting; a "to be continued" with no satisfaction of its own.
