Plain English: Time away from the manuscript before revising, so you read it as a stranger would. Weeks, ideally.

Rule: Build distance before each big revision pass. The repo's analogue is the cold read — a reader given no context, notes, or intentions, judging only what's on the page.

Fail: Revising while still in love with (or sick of) the draft — you'll defend lines a stranger would trip on, or gut lines that actually work.
