Psychic distance / the camera

← Craft Glossary · Point of View, Setting & World

Plain English: How far "back" the narration stands from the character's mind in any given sentence — from "It was a cold morning" (far) to "God, would it never warm up?" (deep).

Rule: Open a scene at a slightly greater distance, then move closer as you engage — and don't jump the slider abruptly (far→deep in one sentence jars).

Fail: Random distance flapping sentence to sentence; or staying so far back the whole book that nothing is ever felt.
