Plain English: The final sweep on the typeset/near-final text — typos, stray spaces, bad breaks, formatting slips. No story or style changes; just catching what survived.

Rule: Last rung, on the formatted artifact, ideally fresh eyes. Read slowly; the brain auto-corrects what it expects.

Fail: Treating proofreading as editing (or vice versa) — conflating the rungs wastes both.
