Plant & payoff (setup / payoff)

← Craft Glossary · Structure & Story

Plain English: A plant is a detail dropped early and quietly. The payoff is the later moment that detail makes possible or meaningful. Plant the gun in act one; fire it in act three. Good craft: plant once, quietly, then let later scenes assume it.

In this project: The gate enforces causal order — a plant must come before its payoff in beat order.
