Modulation

Plain English: Variety in the texture of the prose — fast vs. slow, plain vs. lyrical, loud vs. quiet. Without modulation everything reads at the same pitch and the reader goes numb. "Less polish everywhere, more contrast in the right places."

In this project: A structural-audit dimension; the opposite is "evenness of register" (see below).
