Interiority / thought

← Craft Glossary · Character & Dialogue

Plain English: The POV character's inner stream — reactions, judgments, associations — that prose can render and film can't. The reason to be in a head at all.

Rule: Use interiority to characterize and color, not to narrate emotion flatly. In close third, prefer free indirect style (see that entry) over tagged "she thought".

Fail: Emotion-naming ("she felt afraid") instead of rendering the fear; or endless rumination that stalls the scene (interiority as a substitute for action).
