Inciting incident / point of no return

← Craft Glossary · Structure & Story

Plain English: The event that knocks the protagonist out of equilibrium and starts the actual story (inciting incident), and the slightly later moment they can no longer go back to normal life (first plot point / "break into two").

Rule: Start the book at or just before the incite — "the day their life changes", not the ordinary day before it. Backstory and normal-world texture are delivered after the reader is already hooked, in small doses.

Fail: Pages of throat-clearing — waking up, commuting, mirror-describing, weather — before anything is at stake. The #1 reason agents stop reading (see Opening / hook).
