Gate / gatekeeper

Plain English: A gate is an automatic checkpoint that blocks progress if rules are broken (continuity, key-chain, timeline, mythos). A gatekeeper here also means the final editorial judge that can reject a polish pass for hurting the book (e.g. killing velocity).
