Beta readers / fresh eyes

← Craft Glossary · The Editorial Ladder

Plain English: Real outside readers who report where they were bored, confused, or pulled out — catching motivation holes and "doesn't-feel-right" beats the author is blind to.

Rule: Use them after your own developmental pass, before the final polish; weight patterns across readers over any single reaction. (The repo's analogue: multiple independent agent reads + the convergence rule — convergence across reviewers is the signal; a lone cold read can misread series intent.)

Fail: Acting on one reader's idiosyncrasy as if it were consensus; or skipping outside eyes entirely and trusting your own blind spots.
