Plain English: The smallest unit of story movement — one thing happening that changes the situation. A scene is made of beats. "The beats of a scene" = its step-by-step pulse.

In this project: Beats are the atoms the StoryGraph tracks; continuity, causal order, and POV are all checked at the beat level.
