Adaptation — transposition vs. reskinning (deep-structure fidelity)

Plain English: Adapting or modernising a story well means carrying its deep structure — the arc, the theme/moral, and the craft engine (the POV frame, the central device, the antagonist relation) — into a new setting, and changing surfaces only where the deep structure demands it. Reskinning is the failure mode: swapping props (horses → taxis) while leaving the engine untouched, so nothing that matters has actually moved.
Rule: For each element ask "what is the engine here, and what in the new world produces the same engine?" Transpose the engine; let surfaces follow. A great modernisation is as of its own moment as the original was of its — the author's and reader's shared present (its wars, technologies, anxieties) carried as theme in the characters' interior lives, not as set-dressing.
Fail: Reskinning (cosmetic swaps over a dead structure); setting-as-decor (the new era is scenery, never felt inside anyone); fidelity-as-taxidermy (so reverent to the original's surfaces it forgets the original was alive in its own time, which is the very thing to reproduce).
In this project: the modern-sherlock spin-off's binding doctrine — reproduce each Doyle work's arc/moral/structure/craft, transposed to a post-9/11, social-media, surveillance present. Also the deep-vs-shallow distinction behind the platform's clone feature.
