Essay

Pigmentation, Climate, and Diet

The African Worlds Study Bible · Essay

Why this science page sits beside Scripture

Popular racial myths love simple stories: cold made people white; meat made them clever; heat made people dark and spiritual; Africa is destiny as pigment. Scripture is then conscripted as caption. This edition refuses the conscription. Pigmentation is a biological adaptation shaped by ultraviolet light, vitamin pathways, migration, mixture, and selection — not a ladder of covenant, intelligence, or civilisation.

What Genesis will not do

Genesis 1–11 offers genealogies and geographies, not modern race science. The Table of Nations is a family map (spreads/03-genesis-10.html). Using it to prove that “Hamites” are a colour caste is reception abuse, not exegesis. Likewise, neither Genesis 1’s plant table nor Genesis 9’s meat permission is a code for European evolution. Ice Age Europe does not explain Genesis; Genesis does not rank Ice Age Europe.

Climate and ultraviolet light

At higher latitudes, reduced ultraviolet-B changes vitamin D synthesis in skin. Lighter pigmentation can aid vitamin D production under low UV; darker pigmentation better protects folate and tissues under high UV. Dark pigmentation is ancient in Homo sapiens and adaptive under intense sun. Lighter pigmentation evolved more than once in Eurasia through interacting pressures. This outline is widely established in human biology education; a standard overview is NCBI / NLM discussion of pigmentation and UV.

Important nuances:

Cold alone does not “produce whiteness.” Unsupported as a solo mechanism.

Diet is not a race machine

Humans were flexible omnivores before and during expansions into Ice Age environments. High-latitude winters often increased reliance on animal and marine foods when plants were scarce — a probable ecological pattern, not a moral rank. Archaeology also shows plant processing among Neanderthals and early modern humans; see synthesising work such as the Smithsonian-linked overview of plant foods in Palaeolithic diets (repository.si.edu bitstream).

A vitamin-D-rich marine or animal diet can reduce selection pressure for lighter skin. That undercuts the slogan “carnivory made them white.” Diet, latitude, culture (clothing, shelter), and genes interact. Slogan packages — cold + meat = white superiority — fail both science and ethics (Unsupported). Meat eating does not cause depigmentation as a simple switch.

Arabia and Africa: range, not template

Biblical illustration has often defaulted to a pale “Bible lands” face. Ancient eastern Arabian samples from Tylos-period Bahrain include individuals with high-probability predictions of dark skin pigmentation (PMC10943591). That is GEN/MAT evidence for those persons, not a claim that all Arabians looked alike. Arab identity developed historically among many peoples (Webb, British Academy). Red Sea traffic joined African and Arabian populations for millennia (related population-biology literature, e.g. DOI 10.1002/ajpa.21522).

Restore range. Do not invent a single “original Arab race” or a single “biblical African face.” Use pigmentation notes to correct Europeanised art — and to refuse reverse racial destiny myths. Phenotype is not covenant.

GEN labels and humility

Population genetics speaks in frequencies and probabilities. It does not baptise tribes, cancel Jewish peoplehood, or assign the twelve sons of Jacob to modern American colour categories. This edition uses GEN sparingly, never as a weapon against living communities, and never as a substitute for TXT. Sampled individuals illuminate range; they do not license slogans about “all ancient Arabs” or “all ancient Israelites.”

Ethical close for a study Bible

If pigmentation is adaptation, then preaching that reads holiness off skin is false prophecy. Eurocentric art that bleaches the Nile world needs correction. Counter-myths that damn Jews or pale-skinned people as such need rejection. African dignity does not require pseudoscience; Jewish dignity does not require bleaching Cush.

For readers wrestling with Hebrew Israelite and related genealogical claims, keep science and testimony in separate trays — see hebrew-israelite-movements.html.

Worked readings for teachers

Show two illustrated Bible plates: one bleached cast, one that includes darker African and Arabian faces. Ask what theology each plate smuggles. Then refuse any student attempt to replace bleaching with a reverse caste. Read Genesis 1’s shared plant table beside this science page so “diet” returns to theology of gift rather than racial machinery.

Closing

The Maker’s image is not a Pantone number. Climate and diet help explain human variety; they do not explain away justice, and they do not rewrite Acts or Exodus into race war. Read the first table and the flood permission as theology of gift and boundary (food-creation-concession.html). Read human skin as biology under providence, not as a caste passport.

Pastoral tone

Youth groups scrolling race content need adults who can say both: European Bible art often lied by omission, and reverse myths that damn whole peoples also lie. Teach adaptation; forbid caste. The image of God is not a skin chart.

Commissioned art for this edition should show range without turning every patriarch into a modern American racial category. Correction of bleaching is not a licence for reverse fantasy. Biology explains variation; covenant language explains belonging — and they are not the same dictionary.

Adaptation is not destiny; it is description.
